the world watches u.s. (vote)

it seems as though everyone who you meet, wherever you go, has more than a slight interest in the u.s. presidential election. ..they understand the electoral college process about as well as we do, which means that they ask: "why?" (if they only knew how laws were passed)
.
my observation is probably skewed, since i'm associating with (mostly) travelers and those who cater to travelers, but what i'm hearing is also echoed in the international news. ..here's what those outside the u.s. are saying:
.
* many wish that they had a vote in our vote, since who we elect will have an effect on their world.
.
* many hope for (what they call) a "less arrogant" american leadership style.
.
* many admire the way that every, single person in the u.s. can feel as though s/he is a viable part of the process.
.
* many wish that world powers could find a way to discuss differences, rather than kill innocent women and children as "collateral damage" in battle and war.
.
_______________
.
i've
found that americans are very much like non-americans. ..we want to live better, we want security, we want good things for those who we love, we value friends and family, etc., etc.
.
in a world of differences, people (just like religions, just like races, just like atoms) are a lot more alike than they are different.
.
i hope that, in our future, we'll see a time of increased global awareness, increased global cooperation, increased cross-cultural understanding, increased forgiveness, increased communication, and increased cooperation.
.
a decrease in dependency (on finite, pollutant resources) might accompany an increase in re-usable energy sources.
.
although each of these things seems "dependent" upon what others do, each of us can have an impact. ..every little choice, every little comment, every little thought contributes to the whole.
.
the time for global change is NOW. ..do we, as a planet, really have a choice?
.
as they say in A Course In Miracles, "it begins with me." ..wayne dyer might say: "if you want to change the world, change yourself." ..the Law of Attraction might echo: "if you want a different world, shift your focus to more of that which you want."
.
anyway....
.
here's to YOUR world, being better in 2009 and beyond.

  2. it is nice to be able to say, 'yes i'm american' with a little pride (rather than ducking either due to embarrassment or the incoming expertly aimed object).

keep me updated on your success in complementing the kiwis.

  5. Hi Elsa, Claude, Linda, and Sonia!
    .
It sounds as though we've got a burst of positivity in the u.s.a.
    .
Soooo many people have told me that they never felt better about voting in their lives!
    .
Sonia, I'd LOVE to have Thanksgiving dinner in Chaaaaaalotte, NC, but my flight gets me into Providence, RI on Thanksgiving night.
    .
The Martineau "Gift Exchange" is the most important Martineau-family event of the year, and it goes down on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
    .
I'm shooting for Charlotte on the 10th of December, but have not nailed it down, yet!
    .
Thanks to all of you (and to all of you who e-mail), for following along with this crazy blog. You keep me connected to Home!
