"stupid is as stupid does"

why do animals do stupid things?

i took another hike, today, up to the kuata summit. while up there, i noticed a mountain goat (below), defying gravity while clinging to the side of a cliff by his tiny little hoofs. ..i wondered “why do animals do stupid things like that?

…and came up with the following:

animals do stupid things for two basic reasons:

1. to get food
2. to mate/pro-create

one could probably argue that a "reason #3" would be “to establish territory,” but others would argue that #3 is only a means to #’s 1 & 2. ..heck, #1 might be a means to #2 (but i digress).

…so, meanwhile, back on the cliff...

since i’m the only one within earshot, i yell (to the mountain goat) “what are ya, stupid or somethin?” -- fully expecting him to yell back “stupid is as stupid does, sir.”

but, instead, the obvious became apparent.

i realized that i was stupidly defying gravity by clinging to a mountainside, while stupidly attempting to take a picture of a stupid goat. ..in fact, the goat might not be stupid at all – he might simply be hungry.

when i re-cognized that i was the one who was doing the stupid thing, i revisited the “why animals do stupid things” theory and thought:

(1) i’m not here for food, and (2) i’m not here to mate.

this, of course, led to a reason #3 why animals do stupid things, and it goes something like this:

3. male animals sometimes do stupid things for no apparent reason (in fact, this appears to be kind of a birthright of male animals).

so… there you have it. ..this whole post is simply a confession about moi, being a silly male.

-the end?
