decisions, decisions

okay...
.
the "half-day franz josef glacier excursion" (a 4-hour trek, including about an hour on the glacier) costs $97 (nz).
.
i, however, don't have any cold weather gear, and nobody told new zealand that this was supposed to be springtime.
.
question: do i buy some gear, and look at the glacier from far, far away, or do i freeze my a-- off for the remainder of the new zealand leg of this trip... just to touch a bunch of ice?
.
it would appear that lenny wimped out. ..i went with the jumper, the gloves and the headgear (below). ..the glacier is visible -- way, way, waaaaaaay off in the background.

question #2: is it possible to get closer to that silly glacier, without a guided tour? ..can you buy cold-weather gear, forego the excursion, and still touch glacial ice?
.
stay tuned for a blog entitled "blue ice."
