byron bay, australia

claudia picked me up two nights ago, and we stayed at her friend's place in brisbane. ..yesterday, we drove down to bryon bay (where she & steve live).

below are a few pictures:

below: on the beach (the white "puff in the water [2/3 of the way up, left of center] is the spout of a humpback whale!). ..mother and baby humpbacks are traveling south.

the picture (below) isn't the best, but if you download it and enlarge it, you'll see that there is a large black thing (humpback whale) about half way up, to the left of the bit of the small whitecap ... about 200 yards away from the surfers.

below: sand, surf-ers, and kite-boarders.

  3. How do these beaches compare to Destin? The sand looks just as white as ours, but does it feel like powdered sugar? The h20 looks like a GORGEOUS tourquoise-blue compared to our emerald/teal green,& we have dolphins but no humpbacks. I'm curious how you would rate each beach on a scale of 1-10?

    Love,
Curiosity didn't kill the Cat ;-)

p.s. If you'd like you can also rate the "bikini babes" on a comparable scale of 1-10!

  4. Hi, Clare, Britta, & Cat!!

Yes, Byron Bay is beautiful. This is a place that one could live (easily). The people (Australians, and the international feel) add an element of unbelievability to the scene.

    It's also got a good massage/yoga/meditation network.

    My beach lennyrating: 9.8
    .
(is there a such thing as a "10"??)

Destin has the sugar-sand and the water clarity, but...
...Byron Bay has NO condos, GREAT air quality, less traffic, rocky elevation, whales, pacific bottlenose dolphins, a funky beach-town feel, social activity, aussie beer, cool sayings, and (how can I state this...) the topless option.

Maho Bay (St. John, USVI) might get a 9.8, based upon the eco-factor and solitude... but it really depends upon your mood.
    .
Destin (& the gulf coast beaches) are easily in the top 5 worldwide (IMHO). North Florida is a little slice of paradise -- 9.6 (A+)
    .
I reserve my 9.9 for beaches that I haven't seen yet. We'll see if Fiji can make a play.
