what happens in cambodia...

okay...
.
every now and again, on koh samui, you recognize a distinct olfactory essence that reminds you of college. ..maybe you've inhaled it, maybe you haven't.
.
on samui, that fragrance seems to be quite common. ..on chewang beach, it's the order of the day.
.
i met some folks from london who've been partying on samui for five days, and they say that they haven't gotten to sleep before 7 am on any night yet.
.
that sets the stage for this morning's 6 am jog on the beach.
.
as i made my way down toward the water, the beach was deserted -- except for a group of partiers who obviously were still rocking from the previous night. ..one of them "carlton" (from ireland) was yelling at me before i got down to the water:
.
carlton: "hey, mate, do you want to get high with us?"(except, instead of the word "high," he went with a two-word phrase that rhymes with "plucked-up"). ..he kept shouting: "ït's thai-day, it's thai-day."
.
i politely went for my jog, but on the way back, they stopped me again:
.
carlton: "sit down, mate! guess where my friend is from!"
lenny: "uh... hawaii?"(because the guy had a hawaii shirt on)
.
carlton: "oooohhhhhh, noooooo!!!! " (and then, because i guessed wrong, he proceeded to knock out 10 clapping pushups -- the kind where you clap your hands in between every push-up). ..he did the pushups (of course) because that's what you do when someone gets your friend's country wrong.

i learned that his buddy was from pakistan, another guy was from australia, and the girls were from thailand.
.
carlton: "c'mon, mate, party with us."
lenny: "sorry, but i've got to get to cambodia today."
.
carlton: "cambodia? that's great!!! hey mate, i know this great club in phnom pehn! ..it's called the rock! ..it's death, man, it's death!" (which i assume was a good thing, since he was smiling from ear to ear).
.
i told him that i'd check out the rock, if i could, but i had to get going.
.
he kept yelling as i walked away, and then he just had to say it:
.
carlton: "hey, mate! remember: what happens in cambodia, stays in cambodia."
.
conclusion: be ready for anything, when you hit the beach (first thing in the morning) on koh samui.
